What is a Bios / RTC?

Bios - Basic Input / Output  System
RTC - Real Time Clock

What do the names mean?
Well they are actually the same thing, although the clock is within the BIOS. The BIOS is a small micro-chip on your Motherboard*. It is the first place the computer looks at when you press the button to turn it on. Basically the information stored on this tells your computer what devices you have attached, what order to boot* from, what the correct time is and so on. You probably will have a DVD drive in your machine and the Bios tells your Laptop or Pc to either look first at your hard drive* or DVD drive to start. All of this information has to be remembered somehow when you turn off your Laptop or Pc. There is a small battery on the motherboard which does this. After many years of use - it runs flat and so it needs replacing. You will find the most common replacements below. Please check with your manufacturer which battery is required. The most common is the (CR2032), nearly all Pc's will use this battery (and most Laptops), but certain others will use different ones so please check. The first 2 numbers indicates the width of the battery and the last the thickness, so from the pictures below you can see the CR2032 is much bigger than the CR1220, but the same width as the CR2016. The CR2016 is half the thickness of the CR2032.

**Free delivery on these batteries. Please note manufacturers may vary.

Definitions
